Cannabis Fundamentals
Understanding the Basics
Before diving into products, it helps to understand some key concepts about cannabis and how it works.
What is Cannabis?
Cannabis is a flowering plant containing compounds called cannabinoids. The two most well-known are THC (which produces the "high") and CBD (which is non-intoxicating). Learn more about CBD vs THC.
Indica, Sativa & Hybrid
Cannabis comes in different strain types. Indica strains tend to be relaxing, Sativas are often energizing, and Hybrids offer a balance of both effects.
Understanding Potency
THC percentage indicates strength. Beginners should start with lower THC products (10-15%) and gradually find their comfort level. Our budtenders can help you choose.

Ways to Enjoy Cannabis
Cannabis comes in many forms. Each method offers different onset times, durations, and experiences.
Flower (Smoking)
Traditional method. Fast onset (minutes). Effects last 1-3 hours. Requires pipe, bong, or rolling papers.
Edibles
Gummies, chocolates, etc. Slower onset (30-90 min). Long-lasting effects (4-8 hours). Easy to dose.
Vaporizers
Inhaled vapor. Fast onset (minutes). Effects last 1-3 hours. Discreet and convenient.
Pre-Rolls
Ready-to-smoke joints. Fast onset. No preparation needed. Great for beginners and convenience.
Start Low, Go Slow
Dosing for Beginners
The most important advice for new cannabis users is to "start low and go slow." Everyone's body reacts differently to cannabis, and it's better to start with a small amount and gradually increase.
This is especially important with edibles, which take longer to kick in. Many beginners make the mistake of eating more before the first dose takes effect.
Beginner Dosing Tips
- Start with 2.5-5mg THC for edibles
- Take one or two puffs and wait 15 minutes
- Wait at least 2 hours before taking more edibles
- Choose lower THC strains (10-15%)
- Have CBD on hand—it can help reduce anxiety
- Stay hydrated and have snacks nearby

Will cannabis make me feel paranoid?
Some people experience anxiety, especially with high-THC products. Starting with low doses and choosing strains with CBD can help minimize this risk.
How long do the effects last?
Inhaled cannabis (smoking/vaping) typically lasts 1-3 hours. Edibles can last 4-8 hours. Start slow, especially with edibles.
Can I drive after using cannabis?
No. It is illegal and dangerous to drive under the influence of cannabis in Minnesota. Plan ahead and have a sober ride.
Where can I legally consume?
Cannabis can only be consumed on private property with the owner's permission. Public consumption is prohibited. Learn more about Minnesota cannabis laws.
